Home Invasion?

Yellow jackets! Flying crazily in and out of a space between our Hardy Plank siding and the outer wall of our house. Hundreds of these ferocious critters had invaded that slim space doing who knows what! What if they managed to get inside?

A home invasion—could that happen?

“Of course it could!” my Worst Case Scenario self answered. It was possible. Very possible. Maybe through the vents. After all, I had spotted one in our kitchenette—so yes, it could have come in through the outside vent, entered the ductwork—sent to scout out the interior of our home!

And just like that, the invasion began.

It wasn’t exactly a home invasion. And the invaders were not yellow jackets. It was a heart invasion. Fear of the unknown and worry had flown in like a flash and had me buzzing with anxiety. Several options were presented to solve our pesky problem.

But what about my heart problem?

Worry had crept in; now what would I do with that worry? Would I let it multiply and take over my thoughts and continue to fill me with fear? Is that you, worrying about your student’s housing situation? Like me, are you buzzing with all the uncertainty and questions of how to deal with future or current issues?

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6,7

With that comforting but conditional promise, I took my fears to The Expert.  When I chose to trust Him, my heart invaders fled. (Then I very practically asked for recommendations for an expert pest control!)

We now live in the house I wrote about in 2018 —“The Burleson CharlottesVilla”— where friends and family come to “cozy down.” But believe me, the whole process wasn’t exactly a warm and cozy, relaxing experience! God saw us through many decisions, setbacks, delays, and “issues.” And now, we are incredibly grateful every day for each step that He used to build this house—and us—in the process.

I know He does not love your kids any less than He loved us throughout and since the whole ordeal. I know that He will go ahead of each of your students, and alongside them, and be their rear guard after it’s all said and done—even in this difficult year.

He can and will redeem any wrong steps when they turn it all to Him.

God is with them. Even if it doesn’t look that way.

He is the master architect and incredibly creative in building their lives, renovating the mess, and fully restoring them.

If you are in a place of worry for your kids, take heart! The BEST thing you can do is pray, then watch and keep trusting in The Master Builder. Because God’s not finished!

Housing Wisdom—published 2018

We are currently building a house. Never done it before. There are many steps in the process, and much of it is confusing. In May, we met our construction foreman who has built countless beautiful homes and has the expertise to get it done.

I go by once a week and deliver brownies to the workmen. It can’t hurt, right?

I expect once we are further along if I have concerns, I will reach out to our foreman and he will reassure me that he still knows what he is doing.

Watching a house being built is sort of like waiting for prayers to be answered. It seems like not much is happening, often looks like a complete mess and does not remind you in any way shape or form of the model home.

At various stages, it is a disappointment. Until it is finished.

In a few years, you may not recall the details — the who, what, when, where or how your student’s own housing concerns were solved. Or not solved.

But you will remember that you prayed, and those prayers were addressed to One who is an expert builder, problem solver, provider.

He has His ways — they are not our ways; His timetable is perfect.

Do not worry, instead pray, watch and trust that the Master Builder knows what He is doing.
